Nerding Out With TED

I do admit confidently, that sometimes I can nerd out quite a bit. I don’t really care, if it interests me then hey, it’s okay.

Once in a while though, I’ll go on Wikipedia to look something up or read into whatever is on my mind and I end up Wiki-surfing. I go from one subject to another and another just looking random things up. For example, the other day I went on Wikipedia to look into that new show called Terra Nova, then I ended up reading about Steven Spielberg, then onto Stephen King, Jack Layton, Fallout 3 and lastly, Rio.

Maybe I have an addiction to learning random facts. I could be like that random fact guy who sits in a corner, then whenever someone walks by, I’ll shuffle out of hiding yelling “RANDOM FACT!” and give them one. Even if their running away.

But really, that’s not even what this post is about, and I shouldn’t be creeping out the people that have to put up with reading this neither. It’s more about how I can nerd out a tonne with TED.

Who’s TED anyways? I don’t even know a TED.

Well, okay, TED isn’t a person, its a nonprofit organization that specializes in “ideas which are worth spreading”. It’s basically a conference full of guest speakers that have some innovative ideas for the world. I gotta say, some are pretty inspirational and creative. It has all kinds of people giving the talks, from scientists, to actors, to magicians, soldiers, writers, dancers, investors, etc. Any person, even just regular people that have a big idea.

So if you feel like nerding out, seeing something inspirational or really cool, give it a try! Below are a couple of my favorite conferences.

This TED conference video features Marco Tempest, he’s a magician that uses iPods as his magical props. While he performs, he talks about truth and lies, art and emotion. It’s really neat and worth a watch.

Here’s another one, this ones a bit longer at 18 minutes. This inspiring lady is Charity Tillemann-Dick. She had a double lung transplant and after being told by her doctor that she will never sing again, she proved them all wrong. Watch her amazing speech and musical performance if your up to it.

There’s No Words To Describe A Smile

Today I was working a dayshift over at the restaurant, it wasn’t too bad of a day neither. But during the first shift change, when one of my co-workers came in, I noticed that she must have been crying a lot today. Her eyes were all red, had that bit of sparkle to them that said they were crying and plus her attitude hinted towards the fact as well. Being me of course, I felt a little bad and wanted to cheer her up a bit. I don’t know why, but when someone around me has been having a bad day or anything of the sort, I’m not really the type of person who will just brush it off and ignore it. Even if its somebody I don’t know. So I started to do what I do best.

Of course I gave her a hug first, I didn’t ask what was wrong or anything, I’m not going to prolong whatever it is that’s making her feel down. Plus, if she felt she needed to tell someone, she know’s I’m an excellent listener. I’m an even better hugger though, everyone at camp told me that I give the best bear hugs ever, so that actually makes me a bit proud of the skill. Plus, I love hugs! I think they are the best when you or someone else is feeling a little less than normal, they are always the perfect pick uppers. When I hugged her though, I could tell that she appreciated it and that’s the feeling that makes me know today was a good day because I could help make somebody elses a little better. It’s who I am.

Of course though, for anyone that knows me, they know I wont stop until I accomplish getting a smile. So my mission wasn’t over yet in trying to pick up one of my workmates day.

After working with her a few times, I know what she appreciates, and that is someone who’s sincere and has that kind of humour as well. So I started to tell her a story about when I was eleven. It was about this one time (when I was eleven obviously), I really wanted to see that movie Jaws. I thought it looked really awesome but my parents didn’t want me watching it, so I never was allowed. But one night, it was on TV at 2 AM, so I snuck out of bed and into the living room just to watch Jaws. Probably not the best of my ideas neither, considering the entire time I was watching it, I didn’t move a muscle because I was so creeped out from the movie and too scared to even twitch. Even when the movie ended, I didn’t get up from the couch because I was too afraid to make it all the way to my room. So needless to say, I ended up spending the night on the couch, without even a wink of sleep. I never did tell my parents about that neither, I just pretended I was up before them the next morning to get ready for school. The worst part though, was the constant nightmares for almost a week because of that movie! I don’t remember what they were about, I just remember they caused some pretty rough nights.

Of course I threw some jokes in there though when I told my co-worker, and she seemed to appreciate it all, I think I even saw a bit of a curl of a smile in the corner of her lips. But unfortunately I wasn’t paying attention enough to read into that microexpression.

After I caught that hint of a bit of a smile though, I knew the one thing that would seal the deal, it always worked and never failed. It’s something that I learned from one of the safety officers we had when I went on a trip to Calgary as a non-commissioned officer in Cadets. Her name was Captain Anderson, and everytime we were unloading the bus, she felt the need to get a smile out of everyone before they climbed off at the destination. So while you approached her, she would say really loudly “SSSSMMMIIIIILLLLLEEE!” and really annoyingly I might add as well. She always did it in quite a high pitched voice and dragged the ‘I’ sound quite a lot as well. Sadly for her, it didn’t work as well as she anticipated. Although, to me, I knew it was all about the execution to get it to work and I perfected what she wasn’t able to do.

So if we rewind a bit…

Ljankdjf ajkdfnkadjkfa danjf bmadjkfnajds fahjdnfna *Moves really fast backwards* kaskdj adfn adnfjsd fakndfn ajd naf

As soon as I saw what I thought was a crack of a smile I looked my fellow worker in the eye, gave her a crooked smile of my own and said excruciatingly loudly, high pitched and with that emphasis on the ‘I’, “SMIIIIIILLEEE!” and just for a good measure, I added a really quick but sharp “SMILE!” afterwards. It worked just how it was supposed to and I knew I successfully completed my mission when I saw that huge grin spread across her face.

So there’s a bit of a glimpse in what I try to accomplish everyday when I can. I love making people smile and when I do, I know that day wasn’t a waste at all because I could do so. In a way, its what I live for and I think I do a pretty good job too if I don’t say so myself.

Where people may propose that a picture can say a thousand words, I propose that a smile can make a thousand words seem like nothing, just the feeling of getting one smile out of somebody who needs it is beyond any of the best words to describe it. So keep that in mind next time you see someone who’s having a bad day, even if you don’t know them.

Quotes From The Month Of July

By the time I post this, it will be August officially! So that means I have a bunch of quotes to post. Before I get to that though, I thought I’d mention that the month of July for me was a lot better than the month of June! But still lacking as compared to the stellar May that I had.

Some good points of this month were the workout routine I got back into, a few great hikes and even found a beautiful waterfall yesterday while on a hike! I finally managed to read Under The Dome as well as Dyke Van Dyke’s memoir AND bought the newest Bond book. I also added a lot to owning every Michael Crichton book. I also saw some pretty awesome movies this month as well, the best of those being Super 8, Captain America, Fighter and American History X.

But enough of that, here are all the quotes that were featured in the month of July. Enjoy.

Beautiful Way To End The Night: Skyscraper

I just listened to Demi Lovato’s new single called “Skyscraper”.

I gotta say its beautiful and the sound from her raw voice really shows a tonne of talent and that she has a beautiful story of a life. It’s amazing to hear the emotions and feel her voice, she has a lot going for her and a very bright future.

After hearing the song, I did a little bit of research though and I understand all the emotions and feelings that she really let out in the song after getting through all of her personal difficulties. She is a trooper and someone I now respect a tonne, she’s a pure idol to all the youth out in the world and true to what she is and who she will be.

But here’s the song and hopefully you enjoy it as much as myself that you buy it off of iTunes. Its easy to find being the number one single in the states and currently number four here in Canada.

Lyrics can be found below along with the iTunes download link.

Skyscraper – Demi Lovato

Skies are crying, I am watching
Catching teardrops in my hands
Only silence, as it’s ending, like we never had a chance.
Do you have to make me feel like there’s nothing left of me?

You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper

As the smoke clears
I awaken and untangle you from me
Would it make you feel better to watch me while I bleed
All my windows still are broken but I’m standing on my feet
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper

Go run run run I’m gonna stay right here
Watch you disappear yeah
Go run run run yeah it’s a long way down
But I’m closer to the clouds up here

You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Ohh
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper

Life “Under The Dome”

It’s been a while since I stayed up late just to finish a book, I actually think the last time I did that was last summer when I read Michael Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes. But that’s what I did last night. It ended up being a little past two in the morning when I finally finished Under The Dome, by Stephen King.

I haven’t read too many books by Stephen King, but from what I did read, I was a little confused on how I felt about his writing. He always seemed to have something crazy or insane going on that you could never really predict. Sometimes things just ended up much too far-fetched in his books than I would have liked (hence my mixed feelings). But there’s no doubt he’s an amazing author none-the-less.

In a way he reminds me of kid in a candy shop with his writing, just by the way he seems to always have something going on, even in the slower parts of his books (which sometimes don’t exist). I think the one thing that makes him such a good writer though and what I like about his style is that he knows exactly how to frustrate the reader with the events that occur throughout his work. He is no doubt, a literary genius.

As I said though, I did finish his book, Under The Dome, last night (More like early this morning) and I was quite impressed.

It made an impression on me to say the least.

I got the book for my birthday last October from my parents, and started reading it that night. I didn’t make it very far before realizing that I wouldn’t have much time to get through such a thick book efficiently with my busy schedule. So I stopped reading and put it down until I could find more time to get through it. It was a fairly big undertaking, being one of the longest novels I’ve read (killing many trees at 1072 pages), so I waited out the busy school year before starting the book again.

After reading just the first fifty or so pages on my birthday though, I knew it was going to be a great read and everytime I looked at the huge novel on my desk, I would think to myself, “I can’t wait to read that!”. Finally did, after such a long wait too.

I found that Under The Dome really was an amazing book and everything I had hoped for. It was constantly eventful, creatively brilliant, extremely intriguing and compelling, and very frustrating (in a good way, if that makes any sense).

The elephant of a book featured an entire town in Maine, called Chester’s Mill. It was the quaint sort of place where everyone in town knew each other and was fairly tight knit. So with that said, there was an entire towns population that Stephen King had to play with for the novel, which he took with imagination and in quite a smart manner. Of course though, there were some characters that stuck out more than others as being more of the novels main characters. Some of these characters featured an ex-military officer, a journalist/owner of the newspaper, a power hungry town selectman/used car salesman/drug lore, a thug turned sociopath and a physician’s assistant turned full out town doctor.

As a quick synopsis, the book is about a mysterious dome that drops down over the town of Chester’s Mill on a nice mid-October day. As the novel continues, there are various attempts by the military to break through the dome, all the while, the towns second selectman is working to gain control of the entire town in a power thirsty attempt to become the inspiring leader everyone looks up to and follows. But there is a small group of individuals against that, fit with the task to take control of the town by the United States government. This stand off basically starts a war between the two sides, one with a lot of trickery and manipulation. The novel features several climaxes with tonnes of unpredictable turns and twists that really kept me reading and is one outstanding book.

It’s not just about the psychology of being stuck under an invisible dome neither, feeling like a bunch of ants under a magnifying glass. It really demonstrates the impact people have on the environment as well by showing the deteriorating air quality coming from the small town due to human foolishness and an increasingly thick layer of grime had been forming on the dome.

Even though its a huge undertaking, being such a long book, I think its a great read and would suggest this novel to anyone looking for excitement that will keep them guessing and make them think about the possibilities of such an event occuring.

I think the thing that made me really connect with the novel was the fact that I live in a town that resembles Chester`s Mill. We are basically the same size, have a lot of the same businesses and share a similar community view. Sometimes I even wonder if that happened in my town, what part would I play if any?

I think out of all the characters, I would be similar to that of Scarecrow Joe’s stance. He was kinda working behind the scenes but fairly smart, able to work things out logically and plan in a high stress situation. I think that’s something I would do. I’m not the type to just sit around and wait to see what happens, but I’m also not the type who likes to get noticed a lot, so behind the scenes would my specialty, along with my quick thinking. Or so I think anyways.

I also know, that if it were my town, the air would get thick extremely fast with all of our pollution and stupid people everywhere. But in the end, I think we would definitely work things out better than those of Chester’s Mill, especially since we don’t have any really power hungry citizens. Then again, you know what people are apt to do in a situation of that calliper.

But I hope that someone else shares their thoughts and maybe even inspire somebody to take on Under The Dome by Stephen King.

A Songwriting Session: “(She is) My Dreams Work Of Art”

Music is a pretty big portion of my life. I do play the guitar and played the Saxophone; karaoke and DDR is one of my most favorite past times and I can usually be caught singing some sort of song for every occasion.

But songwriting is actually very new to me.

Sure, I have written a couple fun and goofy songs that make no sense (like the ROFL-Copter Song), but this time I decided to sit down and really do some thinking and real writing. I didn’t really expect everything to go perfect and smoothly; it really didn’t and actually seems a little short. But I came out with a product, so I thought I should share it and get some feedback; after all, other people’s critiques and opinions is a great way for me learn and improve. Who know’s, maybe when I get a little better with writing words into lyrics, I will add some guitar parts to go along with it.

When I started writing this, I decided to go for something from my own experience, I figured that would be the easiest thing to write about. So I decided to write one about love of course, since its so generic and you can usually add a lot of fluff when needed. It’s about basically when I had a long distance and loving relationship (before the bitch cheated on me). We talk every day and we are basically twins, we had so much in common. Plus when we talk, we are free to talk about literally everything and anything, which is a liberty I only share with people I’m close to in my life. Now don’t make the mistake in thinking I’m still hooked on her, I’m far from that. In fact sometimes wonder why I even dated her for so long. Maybe the next song will be how she cheated on me to solidify that.

But here it is, I’m calling it “(She is) My Dreams Work of Art”:

God infiltrated my dreams one night,
Stole the girl and put her in my life.
Everything about her fit so perfectly,
I knew he had made her just for me.

I never saw it comin’
We were just innocently talkin’
But when I finally saw her eyes,
I knew she was perfect;
My angel in disguise.

Even though she’s so far away,
She makes me feel lucky everyday.
Even though we’re worlds apart,
I need to meet her, to stop this bleeding heart.

Oooohhhh I need to get her into my arms.
Oooohhhh She is my dreams work of art.

So tonight when she goes to sleep,
She can close her eyes and have the sweetest dreams.
Cuz not even this distance could keep us apart,
I knew I had to have her from the very start.

Then when she awakes the next day,
I’ll be gently waiting on her balcony.
But when I come I’ll be there to stay,
Where our love can dance the night away.

Oooohhhh I need to get her into my arms.
Oooohhhh She is my dreams work of art.

Even though she’s so far away,
She makes me feel lucky everyday.
Even though we’re worlds apart,
I need to meet, to stop this bleeding heart.

Oooohhhh I need to get her into my arms.
Oooohhhh She is my dreams work of art.
She is my dreams work of art.
